Status: Solved After some persistence and troubleshooting, I successfully got Ubuntu running smoothly on the Orange Pi 5 single-board computer. My goal was to install the OS directly to the eMMC, so I had to boot first with an SD card and then download the image and flash it with the dd command (thanks XDA). While the process was initially challenging, due to trying other OSes before, I managed to push through and now have a fully functional Ubuntu system on this compact device. Special thanks to Joshua Riek for his work and images for this device (And to the Orange Pi Foundation and Community for their continued support and development of this device). I’m still working on using the RK3588S’s NPU for some AI workloads, but that’s for another day!

I’ll update this post with more information as I continue to explore the device and its capabilities. For more info check the Homelab post here.
